Subfamily Usiinae

Members of this genus are small, have a moderately long proboscis, and a discal cell is present. They routinely have 3 posterior cells and a stalked and closed anal cell. They greatly resemble members of the genus Geron in the subfamily Toxophorinae. Separation between the two involves differences in the appearance of the antennae and may require in-hand magnification to appreciate. IIn Apolysis, the antennae are lower on the head (higher in Geron) exhibiting a wider gap between the antennae and the oral opening. Also, the first two antennal segments are subequal in Apolysis while the 1st segment is twice as long as the 2nd in Geron. Finally, the 3rd antennal segment is flattened with a blunt tip in Apolysis, but longer, tapered, pointed, and skewed outward in Geron.  Species delineation in the genus needs considerable work. Our “names” below are merely placeholders until their taxonomy is clarified.
