Genus Toxophora
Toxophora maxima
The abdomen of this species is mostly yellow with broken black rings. However, the last few abdominal segments are paler, often white. The species regularly perches on branch-tips. In favorable light, the eyes sometimes appear blue. It is often attracted to puddles.
Range: COCH, GRAH, PIMA
Occurs: Early May to Late August
Toxophora pellucida
In this species, the middle posterior cell has an extra stub vein pointing distally. In addition to the median yellow line, the abdomen is ringed in yellow. There is confusion in the literature between this species and T. amphitea but we have not turned up a valid record for the latter species.
Range: COCH, GRAH, PIMA, STCR
Occurs: Early April to Mid-August
Toxophora virgata
Locally, this is easily the most common member of the genus. It has a body length of 5-8 mm. The abdomen has a dorsal, median yellow line, sometimes broken into spots.
Range: COCH, GRAH, PIMA, PNAL, STCR
Occurs: Mid-May to Late October, Late March to Early April
Both T. vasta and T. amphitea have been reported but without regional data.
