Genus Systropus

Systropus ammophiloides

With their wasp-like shape, it is hard to mistake members of this genus. This species is a bit smaller than its congener and the thoracic markings are confined to weak white spots at the corners of the pronotum. There are only two known regional records, one from near Portal and the other from the east flank of the Baboquivari Mtns.

Range: COCH, PIMA

Occurs: Late August, Late October

Systropus arizonicus

Larger than the previous species, S. arizonicus may have a body length of 20 mm. It is sporadically common in the fall at middle altitudes. Its pattern differs from S. ammophiloides in having yellow-orange epaulets running the entire length of the lateral edges of the thorax. Watch for it in the canyons or in higher elevation gardens nectaring on small-flowered blossoms.

Range: COCH, PIMA, STCR

Occurs: Early August to Mid-October
