Genus Astrophanes

Astrophanes adonis

This species is usually shiny black, females with a brownish abdomen tip, and males with a silvery white abdomen tip. There are sometimes also white rings on T2 and/or T4. However, the venation is the most useful identification tool, the anal cell being closed at the wing edge. In the spring, this species often nectars at Rhus microphylla but other times of the year it is most common at puddles.
