Genus Anastoechus
Anastoechus barbatus
On this common mid-sized species, the pile is mostly white, cream, or orange throughout, including the last few tergites of the abdomen, separating it from A. hessei. The halteres are whitish.
Range: COCH, GRAH, PIMA, PNAL, STCR
Occurs: Mid-September to Late October
Anastoechus hessei
This species is quite large, and mostly covered in light pile but the last few tergites are almost entirely black. The legs, except for the basal portion of the femora, are orange and the halteres have white clubs.
Range: COCH, GRAH, PIMA, PNAL, STCR
Occurs: Mid-September to Early November
Anastoechus leucothrix
This is a large, variable species with smoky wings and dark halteres, similar to the following species. The hind margin of the eyes is usually rimmed with pure white pile and there is often scattered black pile laterally on the thorax.
Range: COCH, PIMA, STCR
Occurs: Mid-September to Mid-October
Anastoechus melanohalteralis
As with A. leucothrix above, this species has smoky wings, is large, and, as the name suggests, has black halteres. The hind margin of the eyes, however, is lined with mixed white and black pile, and the lateral areas on the thorax are generally pure white.
Range: COCH, PIMA, STCR
Occurs: Mid-September to Late October
