Genus Ogcodocera

Ogcodocera analis

In our region, this is a montane species, found regularly at approx. 6,000 ft elevation. Adults are small, mostly black, have long black lateral pile and a white tip on the abdomen. The wings have 50/50 black infuscation which points distally in the 4th posterior cell. A behavioral quirk of O. analis is that both sexes often stand on their head at wet mud. Compare to the following species.

Range: COCH, PIMA, STCR

Occurs: Early June to Early August

Ogcodocera leucoprocta

In SE Arizona's lowlands, below the Sierrita, Rincons, Swisshelms and Sta.Catalina Mtns, this otherwise eastern species occurs in early summer.  The wing pattern very closely matches that of analis but the pile on the face and front of males is silvery white (as in eastern leucoprocta).  Adults are fond of the flowers of Condalia shrubs and also readily come to water.

Range: COCH, PIMA, PNAL, STCR

Occurs: Early July to Late August
